2017 IAP2 North American Conference

"Pursuing the greater good... P2 for a changing world"

Call for Session Proposals

IAP2 USA & IAP2 Canada are seeking session proposals for the sixth annual IAP2 North American Conference, to be held September 6-8, 2017 in Denver, Colorado, USA.

The conference is expected to attract worldwide participants from diverse backgrounds including government, industry, education, healthcare, community organizations and non-profit groups. It is a unique opportunity for practitioners, students, policy makers, community advocates, community developers, planners and researchers to advance the thinking & practice of public participation (P2)

The theme of the 2017 conference, “Pursuing the greater good …P2 for a changing world,” supports the IAP2 premise that people should be involved in decisions that affect them. We believe that involving interested stakeholders in meaningful discussions can and will lead to “good” outcomes. But does this happen? Do people feel engaged? Does their input make a difference? How are we engaging them in this changing world? Are we missing people?

These are just a few of the questions that we are thinking about but, we are convinced that there are many more that your expertise, experiences and research can address. You might have identified a concern that is critical to your practice or community, or an emerging trend.

Overview of Sessions & Selection Process

The Program Committee is looking for presenters that keep their audiences in mind – so please think about what you would want in a session. We are hoping for sessions that challenge, inspire and involve.

Consider submitting for a 45, 60, 75 or 90 minute session.

As you prepare your session proposal, here are some questions to ask yourself:

  • What results do you wish to achieve from this session? For you as the presenter (s)? For participants? How will the session help participants to reflect and examine issues arising from their practice?
  • What would you call your session? How would you describe it and entice people in 3 sentences?
  • Have you considered collaborating and inviting co-presenters that represent multiple and perhaps divergent perspectives? Have you considered holding a panel or a roundtable?
  • How do you plan to structure your session? If there is a presentation, what will be the ratio of time for presentation/discussion or other interaction?
  • How will you engage participants in your session?
  • How do you think your session will foster network and relationship building? Consider including small group discussions, team work, mini-workshops, etc.

Session applications are due March 7, 2017. Successful presenters will be notified at the end of March. The Conference always receives more session proposals than it can take so stand out, be provocative, be unique, think outside of the box and remember that our Conference participants like to PARTICIPATE!
