IAP2 USA October 2024 News

From the Executive Director  Erin Zimmermann

Spotlight: IAP2 North American Conference Shines in Ottawa

Hello from Ottawa!

As I write this, we are entering day two of the 2024 North American Conference.

NAC brings together public engagement professionals from across Canada and the USA for three days of learning, networking, and inspiration. Held in the heart of Canada’s capital, this year’s event showcased innovative approaches to community engagement, focusing on the theme of “People, Purpose, and Possibility".

There is something so powerful about connecting with colleagues and fellow Change makers. Hearing personal stories, celebrating with our Core Values award winners, and dreaming about future opportunities together is what it is all about.

As the field of engagement evolves, the momentum from this year’s event promises to push the boundaries of what’s possible in the years ahead.

I hope you join us and get involved in meaningful ways. This could include joining a volunteer community, participating in the board election, sharing your thoughts on the Spectrum Evolution, attending next year’s conference in San Antonio, or reaching out to share your ideas.

In gratitude,

Erin Zimmermann,

Executive Director

IAP2 USA

Dear IAP2 USA Members,

I hope this message finds you well as we step into the fall season. September marks an exciting time of growth and collaboration within our organization, and I’m thrilled to share several opportunities for you to contribute and get involved.

An Invitation to Shape the Future of the IAP2 Spectrum

IAP2 is embarking on a review and update of the Spectrum of Public Participation, and we want your voice to be part of this critical process. This is a chance to contribute your insights, experiences, and expertise to help refine the tool that many of us rely on daily.

Please consider joining one of our Virtual Workshops on Oct. 2nd or Oct. 10th. If those dates don’t work, we will also be providing asynchronous opportunities through Online Forums and surveys.

Board Elections

We are thrilled to have received tremendous nominations for IAP2 USA’s Board of Directors. This year, we will have six open board positions (4 full 3-year terms and two 2-year terms). The election will be held Oct. 19th-Nov. 4th. We encourage all active members to participate and vote. You will receive a separate communication on how to cast your votes.

Strategic Plan

IAP2 USA’s Strategic Planning process continues and we will be launching another opportunity for member input. Stay tuned for more information, coming soon!

Chapter Task Force

Are you a current chapter leader or a member interested in getting more involved in chapter leadership? We need your ideas and input to help mold the future of IAP2 USA chapters. If you are interested in serving on the IAP2 USA Chapter Task Force, please reach out to Lauren Williams, Membership and Chapters Manager, at membership@iap2usa.org.

As always, if you have ideas you would like to share, drop me a line at erin@iap2usa.org

Warm regards,

IAP2 Australasia Exploring the Impact of AI on Engagement Practice

This thought leadership paper marks the fourth in IAP2 Australasia’s Thought Leadership Series – an innovative, original research series inquiring into sectoral challenges facing the engagement industry, research and policy.

This paper, Exploring the Impact of AI on Engagement Practice provides a benchmark for exploring the impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies on engagement practice and arises from a desire to understand the benefits, challenges and risks associated with embracing AI in engagement practices. This comes at a time when there are rapid developments in AI, communities are increasingly diversifying, there is public scepticism of government, and legal frameworks to regulate AI are evolving within Australasia.

In order to address the initial research question, ‘How could AI impact engagement practice?’, the report has been informed by a review of academic, government, and industry research and thought pieces available in the public domain. Interviews were also conducted with eight professionals working in five leading engagement businesses. Exploring this question has uncovered key steps for engagement practitioners keen to get started, AI functions that may enhance engagement practices, as well as benefits, myths and challenges around AI adoption as well as risk mitigation suggestions.
