April 2022 Newsletter

From the Executive Manager - Erin Zimmermann

I took my son roller skating for the first time this week. Roller rinks are time warps. The first loop was wobbly, awkward, clunky. But after each circle, it became easier. I could see his comfort and confidence build.

Progress is like that. So often we are focused on the next thing, how to grow, and how to make things even better that we forget to look back at how far we’ve come. My hope for IAP2 and the public participation practice is that we appreciate our firm foundation, continue to build from it, and take time to celebrate along the way.

With that in mind, I am pleased to share our 2021 Annual Report. I hope you will join us at our General Annual Meeting, May 17, 2-3 p.m. (EDT) Register here.

As I reflect on the achievements from the last year, I am filled with gratitude for all our amazing volunteers and members who give countless hours in support of advancing public participation. If you are looking for ways to get involved, I encourage you to consider checking out the incredible opportunities through our Chapters.

Serving on a chapter board or committee is a great way to build relationships with more P2 colleagues and have a meaningful impact on our important work. Each new volunteer brings energy, momentum, and fresh perspectives for our next loop toward our shared goals.

     2022 IAP2 North American Conference - Banff, Alberta September 14 - 16

Together again, at last! After more than two years of online events, the 2022 IAP2 North American Conference (Sept. 14 - 16 in Banff) will finally be an in-person, face-to-face get-together!

Being together again gives this year’s Conference theme even more meaning: “Connecting with Purpose” is about connecting with the P2 community; connecting to achieve diverse representation; connecting with Indigenous ways of knowing; connecting through differences; connecting through the screen.

NOTE: this year’s Conference will be both in-person and Virtual Lite, with some of the presentations live-streamed to those who prefer not to travel at that time. Let the committee know if your session would be suitable for hybrid delivery.

May 10 Learning Webinar NAC Encore - City of Edmonton Ward Renaming Initiative

A reprise of one of the more popular sessions at the 2021 IAP2 North American Conference.

For decades, the wards -- the political districts -- in the City of Edmonton had "Euro-centric" names. But Edmonton and its environs have, throughout history, been a cross-roads and meeting-place for Indigenous people. In 2020, following a request by a group of Indigenous elders and as part of its commitment to further reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples, the city launched a project to give the wards new names.

In this reprise of their highly popular presentation at the 2021 IAP2 North American Virtual Conference, leaders of the public engagement process in this initiative will share how the Indigenous Ward Naming Initiative was developed. A group of Indigenous women led the effort and in December, 2020, the twelve wards were given new names, reflecting the variety of language groups in the area.

Learn the how and why of such a project, and gain some insights for furthering reconciliation in your own work.

April 12 Learning Webinar NAC Encore - From the Bottom Up: How the Public Can Create Public Policy

A reprise of one of the more popular sessions at the 2021 IAP2 North American Conference.

As public policy practitioners, we work with the decision maker to identify and engage stakeholders when stakeholder engagement is necessary to inform the public policy making process.

How can the public proactively identify and engage decision makers?

Can our public participation practices facilitate this form of democratic engagement?

This interactive presentation shares lessons learned when a nonprofit organization paired with two governmental entities worked to influence 52 other elected officials to adopt a joint resolution across a five-county region. Gain a deeper understanding of what is successful and challenging about engaging in a bottom-up public participation process, and an outline of a potential framework for practitioners to utilize.

If our current courses don't meet your needs please fill out this quick survey so we can help you become the P2 practitioner your community needs.
